Anything In Nature

One of the books I’m reading now is Red Write Own by Chris Dixon. There’s a section in which he predicts is going to be the next version of the internet and how we’re going to deal with intellectual property on the internet using the blockchain and using what he calls “modding”, a term borrowed from gaming, whereby gamers will take bits of code from existing works and weave them into their own works. He also used the Lego metaphor which is what I’ve always used. He also referenced music composition which is essentially “modular”: you create verses, choruses, and riffs, and those things can be transformed into different variations. Every morning I’m doing essentially that by going through daily diary entries and abstracting them for lyrics that sound musical or poetic. For example, on April 10, 1996, I had finished writing a song called Embrace Denial and may want to use that music or rhythms within it. This creates the main riff. Then I begin “modding” and making variations. It comes together fairly quickly but immediately begins to evolve. Most of them are, at least initially, harmonically simple. But I tend to like more sophisticated chords, which is what Embrace used, so it’s an homage to that. So all these things kind of come together in an “artificial synchronicity”. #riff
