(Parenthetical) Song Titles


The passing of musicians gives us the opportunity to revisit traditions, some which have withstood the test of time, such as parenthetical song titles. Some of them work, some appear to have parentheses inserted unnecessarily as being clever, or to follow the musical phrasing.

Here are a few examples. 

Radiohead, “Exit Music (For A Film)” and “Street Spirit (Fade Out)”
Talking Heads, "Born Under Punches (The Heat Goes On)"
The Jimi Hendrix Experience, “Voodoo Child (Slight Return)”
Talking Heads, “This Must Be The Place (Naive Melody)”
The White Stripes, “You’re Pretty Good Looking (For A Girl)”

"Don't Get (What You Don't Get)", which naturally suggests a chorus idea:
