The Internet (And AI) As An Instrument

 

If somehow all your tools went missing, and you had lots of ideas, and you still wanted to pursue them, you would find some way to do it, even if you had to remake the tools. 

The whole purpose of creativity and art is to be able to make something out of anything spontaneously in the moment. These days, many musicians are using AI generation tools, and those tools are always changing. Consider a hammer that you've used for 10 years, and all of a sudden the shape of the handle is different; you'd have to use that hammer in some way, or not use it at all, or try to find something else. If you can't find anything, perhaps it's just a matter of waiting for the right moment. In photography, sometimes I see things that I'd like to capture. I’d make a mental note of it or jot it down somewhere, then later on go back and get it. Perhaps that's what we need to do when we feel frustrated by how the tools are changing. 

It's so much different than it used to be. If we rely on software or if we use the internet as an instrument, those instruments or tools are always changing. Because they're in the cloud, they're not anchored to anything. That's one of the bad things about using the internet as an instrument. Using the recording studio as an instrument was always interesting because the tools weren't always changing. Instruments mostly stay the same, but the feel of them can change, and affects how you play--if you play it at all, if you feel they've somehow lost the magic.
