Jasper Johns liked hiding "easter eggs" in his work in hopes you'd see them. If you study the drips, you realize they were cunningly orchestrated. Drips are seen as accidents but some of them are carefully re-contextualized as intention. Perception is consensual: When people look, they see and perceive as a group. Johns may have realized that people would be too busy seeing a target or a flag, and placed things just barely below the surface. It is "didactic" in the sense that it cleverly reminds us to more deeply observe.
