Steely Dan was one of the most unique bands that extended 40s and 50s big-band music into the 70s, with through-composed charts, such that you could swap out session players and the songs would be just as good.
There also used to be a nice camaraderie amongst players, where praise for a fellow player was not uncommon. No one was a celebrity as a side-person--they were there to serve the music. Even Donald Fagan as front-man was not exactly showy.
Unsung heroes are the best kind in music.
