The film "Arrival" was a cavalcade of artist references: Stanley Kubrick (compulsory), John McCracken (the "Black Slab"), Jaume Plensa, Richard Serra, Jackson Pollock, Cy Twombly, Andy Goldsworthy, the Zen symbol, and others I probably didn't detect on first viewing.

Apparently Steven Wolfram was the science consultant.
