On Chuck Close and Music Metaphors

Chuck Close always said that he was inspired by composers, plotting a piece of music incrementally note-by-note, until the piece is finished. He doesn't seem like he was affected by the stroke, in the sense that the work he was doing before the incident is similar to what he was doing after it. As to the connection with music, very often people that have strokes, can still sing words even if they can't speak them. Similarly, artists can still use the grid. The brain always has a grid that remains intact for any language, even visual language. The music metaphor that informed his way of working, was apparently not affected.
