Unplugging

It's interesting to hear songwriters do acoustic versions of their old songs. Here Elvis Costello does Red Shoes. The chord changes are different--not what was on the produced version. Perhaps he forgot them, or perhaps he's putting an emphasis on the words, which is what most singer-songwriters are inclined to do. The purest forms of songs are essentially about the stories to be told through the oral tradition, playing and singing with minimal technology. Recording made other sonic experiences possible, and is the world that most listeners are familiar with. Most people like songs for this reason, but sometimes the unplugged versions reveal the bones of a song.
