Connectivity

Jasper Johns was crazy like a fox. Apparently he made many of these cross-hatch pictures. In this one, there appear to be six stretchers, but there are actually four; The edges on the right-side are trompe l'oeil. While the visual cell elements are boring, the execution was not.


The same thing is happening in Matisse's Bathers By A River, that appears to be done in panels, but is just one canvas set off by a black vertical stripe. The Johns is a "trick of the sly", the other the natural result of attempts to resolve the work over almost a decade.
