Recycled Air

If you write long enough, you collect so many ideas that can be retreaded to fit perfectly into some other collection. Apparently Breathe, the opening track on Dark Side of the Moon, was repurposed from the soundtrack from the 1970 documentary The Body. Its pedigree is film music, which set the mood for the whole album--and music history.

The first Earth day was in 1970, the official start of The Environmental Movement. The juxtaposition of images of smokestacks in the countryside, and other downer images--set against Roger Waters' typical sardonic ironicism, cajoles us to breathe in the air. (See end of clip)
