Public Sculpture

Tony Tasset's Eyeball almost finished. I will wait to see the public reaction. It may be seen as too literal.

Big public sculptures may be more interesting if they are abstract and less literal. Oldenburg sculptures are very effective in this regard. They appear as literal and obvious representations of common objects, but they hint at a certain degree of ambiguity. Cloud Gate resembles a bean and consequently became its moniker. It may look like a cloud, but not knowing its title, most would apply the visual onomatopoeia.

Our visual bias frequently intersects with language. Interesting: visual colloquialism, visual bromide

Calder was excellent at public sculpture as they are abstracted organic forms. There is not much that one can do with a sphere to make it an abstraction of something.
