Jaco at his finest
(With guitarist Bireli Lagrene, circa 1985)
It is both inspiring and somewhat tragic to see Jaco at his finest. We always had the Janus face of Jaco: one a great musician, the other struggling with mental illness, and you could never predict which personality you would see. It's too bad his problems were not addressed sooner, as I think we would have had him around longer. If you compare this performance of Teen Town with (the other bassist) you can see the dramatic difference in musicianship. It's a really difficult piece for most bassists, and has now become the etude of choice.
