Record Labels (Literally)

Just what is a Record Label?

By definition, a Record Label is a for-profit business that makes recordings, copyrights them, and puts them in some kind of a tangible medium. Now that two of these are no longer valid, it can still make recordings, but the intellectual property is unmoored and unprotected. In absence of tangibility, a record label can be a way to place the music in memory.

The actual printed labels on the vinyl discs can have powerful semiotic value. Merely seeing the labels is evocative of the various eras in recorded music.

Labels (on records or otherwise) are powerful cultural signifiers.

Here is a cavalcade of record Labels that are emblazoned into memory:

The Capitol logo circa 1964. Just seeing this brings back memories of Beatles vinyl spinning on a record player. I can even smell the machine oil.
